Why is the council still spending millions at Elvaston Castle?

RUNNING Elvaston Castle and its grounds has cost ratepayers more than £5 million in the years since Derbyshire county Council revealed who it wants to take control of the site.

The authority, which owns the historic site, intends to lease the castle to Highgate Sanctuary to save cash. It says the move will save £3 million in repairs and more than £500,000 a year in running costs.

But delays to the scheme mean the council has spent more than £5 million on running costs since Highgate was selected in September 2004.

But where is the money being spent? The the estate is in a poor condition and getting worse year on year.

Highgate intends to turn the castle into a hotel with adjoining golf course but the long delay was caused by a hold-up in completing a report the council had commissioned which is, in turn, delaying a further report.

It is a farcical set of circumstances. Who elects these idiots?
