Derby Folk Festival

The Derby Folk Festival is set to take place on the weekend of October 7-9 in the Assembly Rooms, based in the city centre.

Now well-established on the music scene calendar, the festival has built up a reputation as having one of the best guestlists any festival of its size could offer with a top headline band for each of the three evenings, plus a host of well established names in folk and acoustic music. This is the biggest social event on the Derbyshire folk calendar.

The festivities start on Friday evening with a ceilidh in the Darwin Suite featuring Midlands band Dancecupola and a concert in the Great Hall with David Gibb and Elly Lucas, Martyn Wyndham-Read and one of Britain’s best singer songwriters, Steve Tilston.

The concert is followed by the Demon Barbers Roadshow with their new exciting up-temp show Time Gentlemen Please. This 17-strong band of musicians and dancers was voted Best Live Act at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

Saturday kicks off at 12noon with Lester Simpson’s show Standing in Line, a musical story from the Great War in song and rhyme. There are three afternoon concerts to choose from, plus a French Bal with dance displays leading up to the evening concert with Calan, a five-piece young band breathing new life into Welsh music, Nancy Kerr And James Fagan, one of the classiest acts in acoustic music playing fiddle, bouzouki and voices in stunning harmony.

Topping the bill is Show Of Hands, offering a tour de force in acoustic music.

Sunday starts with harmony singing followed by two concerts. The first is in the Darwin Suite with melodeon wizard Andy Cutting, hilarious monologues from the bard of the folk scene, Les Barker, and singing from Heidi Talbot, former singer with Irish-American group Cherish The Ladies. Heidi will be joined by the great Scottish fiddle player John McCusker and guitarist singer songwriter Boo Hewerdine.

The final concert held in the Great Hall will be headlined by Home Service, an eight-piece classic folk rock band who have recently reformed after 20 years. Their support act will be local singer Lucy Ward.

Daytime and evening tickets are now available with a range of value prices, including discounted Early Bird Tickets up until July 31, from the box office on 01332 255800 or the ticket hotline on 01773 853428.
