Award for Quarry clear up

A MAMMOTH project to clear up a former Peak District flourspar quarry has come runner-up in a national awards scheme.

Lafarge, which runs Hope Cement Works, and a local farmer were nominated in the Mineral Products Association’s national Restoration Awards for the project at Dirtlow Rake, near Castleton.

The work involved moving around one million tonnes of waste material and spoil to allow the site to be returned to agricultural use.

Farmer and landowner Joe Dalton has also opened a path across the site and Lafarge has installed a public information board to give newcomers information about the area.
